Long time no…talk?

by Chook on April 3, 2012 at 10:34 am

Well, it’s been a while since I’ve posted, I may have been quiet but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been busy. Issue two of Dwarf and Gnome is in the works along with an 8 page story for an anthology coming out from 215 ink.

For everyone in Australia there are some very cool things happening at the comic cons around here in the next few months. Stan Lee and Scott Kurtz are coming down under! I never thought I’d see this happen, so exciting. Scott Kurtz is an amazingly talented artist/writer and the creator of PVP, one of best comics of all time and my personal favourite, and if you don’t know who Stan Lee is….. Well I can’t really help you. Honestly if you don’t know who these guys are then you should be thoroughly ashamed of yourself :P

Scott Kurtz along with Kris Straub (another fantastic comic creator) will be attending the Melbourne Supanova con that’s running from the 13th–15th of April 2012. They will also be hosting the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra event ”Video Games Unplugged” a couple of days prior, the 11th and 12th of April 2012. You can check out the details here Link.

So if you are in the area make sure you drop by the con and pick up some of their books, you won’t be disappointed. Then Stan Lee, STAN FRIGGIN’ LEE!!! Is coming to Aus and will be at the Oz Comic-con that’s happening in Melbourne from the 30th of June to the 1st of July. I am SO excited for this. Stan Lee is my all time personal hero, I have wanted to meet him since I was a young kid and never thought I’d get the chance.

Cheers,

Mason

A little bit of good a little bit of bad

by Chook on December 23, 2011 at 8:52 am

First off I wanted to thank everyone who has visited the site and shown their liking of Dwarf and Gnome, the comments I’ve received either on the site or via email and twitter have been great and I appreciate every single one of them.  So thank you all for making D&G a far greater success than I had imagined when I began.

There are some big changes happening at the moment. Unfortunately I won’t be continuing D&G as a webcomic, as much fun as I’ve had doing it I just feel that the story I want to tell may be too ambitious for this format, so to that end I have decided that developing D&G as a comic book would be more beneficial.   If you follow me (@Mascole07) or Dwarf and Gnome (@DwarfandGnome) on twitter or The Dwarf and Gnome fan page on facebook then you will know that for the last couple of months I have been working towards that goal, but I’ll have more about that in another post soon.

The good news is that I have another webcomic to take D&G’s place.  The story will be a bit lighter and will have touches of a gag a day strip, so I hope you will all enjoy it as much as you have Dwarf and Gnome.

Stirring the pot

by Chook on December 14, 2011 at 1:59 pm

Lately I’ve been seeing an unsettling trend within the comic industry, I seem to be seeing more and more big name artists doing ‘Drive byes’ on comics. A drive bye is where a creator will only stay on a title for a couple of issues and then leave again, on to other things, like a kid with adhd that can’t concentrate longer than a few seconds.

This happens a lot when a company is putting out a new title or trying to bolster sales. They will put an ‘A list’ artist on a new title to garner interest and add more hype to the title and then after three issues the artist is gone and a new artist appears. From a business standpoint I completely understand why they do this, the better creative team on a book and the more buzz and excitement surrounding it will generally equal higher sales, their logic can’t be faulted on this point. But as a fan however it can get really bloody annoying, the last thing you want is to get interested in a comic because of the creative team, invested in a title and a story and then the reason for you reading the comic in the first place leaves. It can be very jarring to say the least.

In case of some creators the reason for the short runs and frequent shifts is due to them being unable to keep up with the schedule, where in the past creators where able to stay on a monthly schedule, now we see the schedule changing to fit around the creators more and more, the days of the fast artist are almost certainly behind us. Nowadays it’s not uncommon to see companies have comics in productions six months to a year before the comic will even be announced, just to ensure that the book can keep a monthly schedule.  Another point could be made that these high profile creators have risen to a point in their careers where they are so sought after that the money and jobs follow them, where they can pick and choose what they want to do.

The reason I’m even writing about this is because this happened recently for me with three new titles that I was really stoked about, yes you read that right, THREE! Joe mad on Avenging Spider-man, he’s doing 3 issues and then another artist will jump on for three issues and then Mad is back for three issues.

Then there was Chris Bachalo on Wolverine and the X-men, three issues and he’s gone.

Finally Mark Silvestri on The Incredible hulk, three issues and he’s off the book. Not to mention the fact that the three issues he did were full of other artists ‘helping’ out on pencils assists, He couldn’t even get one issue out without help.

That last one really pisses me off, I pay good money for a book by a certain artist and he can’t even do it. What a rip!

Ooh I almost forgot, now we find out there is a fill in artist taking over for Jim Lee on JLA#7

I mean c’mon, can’t the industry do better than this.

Consider me Avenged!

Holy S%@*!!

Here I am checking out the new comics available on comixology when lo and behold what do I find? Marvel has a preview of the up coming Avenging Spider-man By Joe Mad and Zeb Wells. This looks sick!! I’ve seen some previews of Mads pencilled pages for it before but to see it in all it’s coloured, lettered glory is so full of win. Mad just keeps getting better and better. Go check it out here. I have been waiting for this for so long. Looks awesome.

Let me know what your thoughts are. Dig it or not.

Con Fever

by Chook on October 14, 2011 at 5:51 am

Hey,

A few cool things are happening this weekend that I thought I’d do a quick post about. First off, NYCC (New York Comic Con) kicks off today, running from October 13th to the 16th. This is one of the biggest comic conventions going, there will be so many great people from the comic industry attending, and I’d name them all but the guest list is basically a who’s who of the comic world. Panels, signings, cosplay, major announcements and awesome stuff to buy, NYCC has it all. There is also a huge entertainment part to the con, including people from the movie and TV industries. So if you are a comic or entertainment fan and can get your arse to NYCC you won’t be disappointed. There is so much to do and see for all ages, unless it’s a bit geographically difficult like for me being in Australia, which I’m pretty bummed about. You can check out everything that’s going on over at their site newyorkcomiccon.

On the bright side for people living near the Gold coast here down under and where I’ll be heading off to today is the EB games expo that’s running over the weekend down at the Coast convention and exhibition centre. I’ve never been before so I’m really excited to have the chance to check it all out. As you can expect, a heap of game companies will be represented there. So I’m looking forward to checking out all the upcoming games and getting to have a crack at them before release. I’ll let you know my thoughts when I get back :D You can check out what they have going on over at ebexpo.

Finally I just wanted to do shout out for the new Ultra Duck OGN that’s just come out from Arcana This is the tail (hehe see what I did there?) of Carlos, a down on his luck duck that can’t quite get his act together until during a fateful series of events he receives Superpowers and has to grow up and finally become the duck he is destined to be. Brought to you by the talented Edgar Delgado and Omar Lozano, with some awesome pages and covers by superstar artists Humberto Ramos and J. Scott Campbell.

I first heard about Ultra Duck around a year ago and have been impatiently waiting for it to come out, and I have to say the wait was worthwhile. The book does not disappoint. You can check out the preview here and buy the digital download here or pick up the book at your local comic shop.

Anyone whose going to any of these events feel free share some stories!

Mason
